Rifts by hashrunner (2025)

Rifts is a protocol artwork that transforms EVM bytecode into a canvas — fracturing the very fabric of Ethereum's closed, mathematical universe of objective truths and opening it to subjective perception.

The collection consists of 128 smart contract artworks containing no logic, no control flow, and no instructions. They are bytecode as material rather than program, rifts in Ethereum's compute space, standing as pure form without function.

Ownership is recorded through an ERC-721 contract, with each token pointing to one of the deployed contracts. Every token reads bytecode directly from its contract via the EXTCODECOPY opcode at runtime, before rendering it as onchain-generated SVG. The artwork exists simultaneously as deployed contract and EVM-computed image.

Rifts stands in the lineage of works that engage the foundational structures of the World Computer, treating it as more than infrastructure (@maltefr, 2024). By transposing execution into seeing, it frames the EVM's substrate of computation — ordinarily concealed in use — as the object of contemplation. Conceived in late October 2024, following conversations with 0xfff and friends at Nguyen Wahed in NYC, the piece invites viewers to encounter Ethereum's unseen machinery of logic and truths as art.
